Dear sir
I have done my under graduation in mechanical engineering from NIT Silchar, India with a cgpa of 8.7/10. My GRE score is quant – 167 verbal – 158. I wish to pursue my masters in petroleum engineering, can I do it with a mechanical degree? Also is my background good enough for top petroleum colleges( texas , college station ; colarado school of mines)?
Kindly reply.
My sincerest gratitude in advance.

Ashesh

Greetings Ashesh,

Thanks for reaching out. You can definitely pursue ms in petroleum with a bachelors in mechanical engineering. At first look, you GRE scores should get you into a good school… However there are no guarantees whether you can get into University of Texas or Colorado school of mines. Just stay positive & apply to other elite schools as well. I am confident that you will get accepted to one of the schools sooner or later!

Take Care,

Chet

Dear sir
Thanks for replying. Sir as I have still some time left before application of fall 2015 starts may be I can rewrite my GRE . If I do so what will be a safe score for getting into University of Texas or Colorado School of Mines.
I extend my sincerest gratitude for providing valuable insight.

Hi Ashesh,

I safe score would be anything over 1250 combined on average. Quantitative score to be atleast 750, and Verbal to atleast 500.

These numbers will not guarantee anything as the schools also look at your overall GPA.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Chet
